The eighth edition of this classic ode to fishing from Izaak Walton, complete with ten copper plates. The eighth edition. Complete in two parts bound into one, with separate title page for Part II stated as the "fourth edition improved", also dated 1772. Pagination and register runs continuously. With four final leaves of index. ESTC No. T84916 With ten copper plates and numerous in-text illustrations, including a frontispiece. Collated, complete. In a full contemporary calf binding. First published in 1653, The Compleat Angler serves as a celebration of the art and spirit of fishing in prose and verse, and is considered the most famous book on angling ever published. It furthermore encouraged the developing interest in environmental conservation and wildlife management. With a series of useful notes by Moses Browne, a poet and cleric who contributed to The Gentleman's Magazine, finding success as a devotional writer. In a full contemporary calf binding, with endpapers. Externally, with significant rubbing to the extremities and strain to the joints. Loss to the spine head and tail and vertical crack to the tail. Armorial bookplate to the front paste down, with 'William Hodson' inscribed below. Internally, generally firmly bound, with crack to the spine showing between pp. 214-215. Pages are slightly age toned, but generally clean, with the odd spot. Contemporary ink inscription dated 1810 to the front free endpaper, stating this copy as "a gift from [James Robson's] highly respected friend and neighbour Mr. Hodson. Good Only. …
