A Compleat Method Of Studying Divinity: Or, A Regular Course Of Theological Studies. Transl by Louis Ellies-Dupin describes a comprehensive plan for studying theology, bridging Scripture, Tradition, and the use of profane learning. The book presents a twofold method of theological study (Positive or scholastic) and outlines how to begin, what texts to read, and how to order the study from early Christian writers through medieval and early modern scholars. It emphasizes the guardianship of Scripture and Tradition, cautions against overreliance on philosophical systems, and advocates a balanced approach that uses reason as an aid rather than a sovereign rule. The work covers methods for interpreting Holy Scripture, the study of Tradition, and the evaluation of authors, Councils, and controversies, including detailed guidance on studying the Sacraments, Ecclesiastical Discipline, Morality, Ecclesiastical History, and Canon Law. It culminates in practical plans for reading, teaching, and preaching within the Parisian scholastic tradition, alongside a Catalogue of relevant authorities. This volume thus serves as a foundational guide for students and teachers of divinity, detailing both aims and procedures for a rigorous theological education.
