Dr. Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802-1866) was a lifelong resident of Belfast, ME and a clockmaker, by trade. From the late 1840s until the time of his transition, he wrote down his own particular philosophical, psychological and metaphysical views on life, death, health, religion and the mind. His early studies of hypnosis, then called mesmerism, led him later on to develop his unique method of healing for both mental and physical affirmities. Proud of his New England heritage, passionate in his love of liberty and equality for all, outspoken in his admonitions against what he considered aristocracy and priestcraft, empathetic toward the sick and suffering, he recorded his experiences, experiments and case studies of his own life journey's explorations into humanity and spirituality, in order to leave behind, for us, what he found, for himself, to be universally applicable truths, for the benefit of all mankind. For this reason, he wrote this book. ~ Rev. Lux Newman, Church of Spiritual Science

About the Author
Dr. Phineas P. Quimby was a philosopher and metaphysician who did not believe in death, heaven nor hell, except as states of mind. The reported cures of thousands of individuals in the New England area granted him a certain amount of fame during his later years. Among his students and friends was Mary Baker Eddy, who several years after his passing founded the First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston, MA. Although Dr. Quimby did not approve of any formalized religion of his day, he stated, "The introduction of religion based on science is the commencement of the new world. The science which shall devour our errors is the teaching of this great truth.... Then a new world begins, and a new religion springs up, based on science. Under this religion, no man will say to another, 'Do what is right,' for all will do right because he will feel right in so doing."
