A good clean copy with Volume I having an engraved portrait of Milton by Vertue from a drawing by J. Richardson. Edited by Thomas Birch. Titles in red and black. There is some damp staining in the upper margin of Volume I, fading towards the middle, but with very occasional loss at the beginning affecting the running title. The first leaf of the Life of Milton has a small hole with the loss of a few letters only. Volume II is a very clean, crisp copy. Attractively rebound (mid-nineteenth century?) in half calf, marbled boards, six raised spines with repeated gilt devices in the compartments. Titles in gilt between bands one and two on a walnut leather background; volume numbers between bands five and six on a maroon leather background.
John Milton was born on December 9, 1608, in Bread Street, Cheapside, London. He died on November 8, 1674, of the gout and a month short of his sixty sixth birthday. He was buried in St. Giles' Church, Cripplegate, London. Milton ranks next to William Shakespeare among the English poets.
