A Complete Collection of the Protests of the Lords: 1741-1825

A Complete Collection Of The Protests Of The Lords: 1741-1825 by James Edwin Thorold Rogers documents a curated archive of formal protests entered in the Lords' Journals and related manuscripts. Spanning multiple centuries and assembled as part of a four-part series, Part 1 covers roughly 1741–1767, presenting the constitutional anxieties of Britain's mid-18th century governance. The entries, signed by leading peers and clergy such as the Earl of Chesterfield, the Duke of Marlborough, Lord Gower, the Archbishops, Bathurst, Macclesfield, Cobham and others, articulate a sustained critique of ministerial power—particularly regarding standing armies, taxation, foreign policy, and the limits of royal prerogative. Each protest includes a brief summary of the debate followed by a long, itemized sequence of arguments defending civil liberties, parliamentary privilege, and the necessity of parliamentary scrutiny over government measures. The work frames Parliament as guardian of liberty and constitutional order, offering a historical resource for scholars of British constitutional history, war finance, and imperial policy.
