A Complete History Of England: From The Descent Of Julius Caesar, To The Treaty Of Aix La Chapelle, 174. Containing The Transactions Of One Thousand Eight Hundred And Three Years by Tobias George Smollett. This sweeping account surveys the crisis years following the Glorious Revolution as William III and Mary II seek to secure their regime across England, Ireland, and Scotland while facing a widening European war. It traces naval clashes such as the Beachy Head action (1689–90), the Irish campaign culminating in the Limerick settlement, and the continuing struggle on the Continent where the Grand Alliance campaigns against France unfold from Namur to Steenkirk and beyond. The narrative highlights political and diplomatic maneuvering in Parliament over taxation, liberties, and the prerogative, as well as the hardening of religious settlements and the perilous Jacobite threat. Prominent figures enter the arena — William and Mary, Marlborough, Sarsfield, Godolphin, Somers, and a host of Tory, Whig, Presbyterian, and Catholic actors — as governance shifts, oaths and indemnities are debated, and the Hanoverian succession takes shape. Against a backdrop of civil conflict, mass mobilization, and foreign alliances, the work portrays a pivotal period when throne, church, and realm are remade in the crucible of long wars and political revolution.
