When complete, this three-volume edition-to-be will accumulate in chronological order all 115 of Shaw's prefaces (several unpublished) for the first time. The uninitiated should realize that Shaw's prefaces are anything but dry; they are subject to the same brilliant eclecticism that characterizes his letters (available in the superb Collected Letters , which Laurence also edited). Many of the prefaces are longer than the works they precede and may take in literary, social, political, and economic concerns. Footnotes help with obscure references and apparent anachronisms caused by Shaw's chronic tinkering with and revisions of these texts, sometimes many years later. Always thought-provoking, Shaw can still prove stimulating to today's reader, but because of this set's anticipated cost and the wide availability of many of the prefaces elsewhere, this is recommended mainly for research libraries.
