Composition A series of exercises in art structure for the use of students and teachers

Composition by Arthur W. Dow is a practical guide designed to teach the principles of visual composition to art students and teachers. The book offers a systematic approach to understanding and applying the fundamental elements of design, including line, shape, color, and form, in the creation of aesthetically balanced and harmonious works of art. Dow emphasizes that art composition is not merely a technical skill but also a creative process that requires thoughtful consideration of structure and artistic expression. The book is divided into a series of exercises, each of which introduces different concepts related to visual composition. Dow provides clear instructions and examples, focusing on how to arrange elements within a composition to achieve a sense of balance, unity, and rhythm. The exercises are designed to build progressively, starting with simple tasks like arranging geometric shapes and gradually moving to more complex compositions. Dow's approach encourages students to think critically about the relationship between elements in their artwork, fostering both technical proficiency and creative thinking.
