The reader is cautioned in the Introduction to treat with care the transcript made about the year 1700 by a John Moore (the original no longer survives). Moore 'was a careless and incompetent practitioner, who wrote quickly (in a hand which, clear for the most part, has yet some exasperating ambiguities), without much consideration for the sense . Thus two of the most important elements in the book, the figures and the names of persons and places, have been transmitted to us in so inaccurate a manner that, unfortunately, little confidence in them is possible.'.
