Item description from seller

Print on Demand. This book, published in the 1920s, presents findings from a rigorous study focused on compressive strength in steel plates. The main objective of the investigation was to verify a commonly accepted structural design rule, which stated that wide web plates in compression should not exceed in width thirty times the thickness of the plate. Furthermore, the book includes an in-depth analysis of the strength of laterally supported wide webbed columns as well as a comparison of the merits of single-plate and double-plate webs of equal thickness. The tests conducted by the author and presented in the book showed that while the common design rule was conservative, buckling strength is also heavily dependent on the mechanical properties of the material, and that the buckling resistance of a plate could be computed for materials with known properties. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.
