Wasting no time in preliminaries, Stewart (Belladonna, 1992, etc.) opens with mutilated model Cristina Parigi's frantic, fatal, very public plunge into the East River and then, within a few pages, shows her employer already erotically re-creating herself as Cristina. Why is Joanna Lefever--married to brilliant British psychologist Stephen Lefever, mother of budding beauty Bella, successful head of Designing Women, ridiculously wealthy by inheritance (much sumptuous detail about her Mercedes and the family charitable trust she heads)- -so desperately taken by the desire to masquerade as dead Cristina, taking her Upper West Side apartment and making herself over with clothes, scent, wigs? She thinks it's the commanding presence of Mephistophelian painter Louis van Nyman, whom she repeatedly follows out of receptions and into luxurious cars for quick, brutal, upscale sex. But as one of Stephen's new colleagues at Berkeley painstakingly explains to him--after the rift between Mr. and Ms. Right widens when his chair at Columbia fires him (making it clear that his visiting professorship has depended on the funding they've all counted on from his wife's trust)--she's so maddened by grief over the death of their baby Luke two years ago that she literally can't bear to be herself. Stephen (along with all but the dimmest of readers) already knows just how true that is, since Joanna can't forgive herself for cutting short Luke's agonized bout with cancer by administering a merciful injection, and has been battling her own demons--personified by Luke's blackmailing former nurse--ever since. If she looked into her new lover's rsum, she'd see that she was due for all the punishment she craved, since Louis specializes in harrowingly realistic studies of martyrs' dying torments. Workaday suspense alternating with steamy soft-focus sex tableaux, by turns hypnotic and silly (``he could see through her skin to the subcutaneous structure of her body'')--like a more elaborately plotted version of Damage. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. Stewart's novel is an "erotic thriller," part of a trend that seeks to combine the steady low-pressure pleasure of mysteries with that of pornography. Focusing on the increasingly dangerous (not to say psychotic) sexual adventures of the independently wealthy head of a fashion design house, who begins to take on "the personality" (however faintly drawn) of one of her models (whom we meet minus a breast, in the first chapter, staggering bloodily down a street and leaping into the East River, where she is run over by a racing boat). Compulsion describes a banal world of money, privilege, and name brands. It hints at interesting concepts in behavioral psychology and personality disorder, but does little to distinguish itself on these fronts from similar books. The characters are functional (usually brilliant and eccentric), the sex creepy, the violence silly, and the suspense hangs on whether the husband will save the wife, thereby uniting them and assuaging their joint guilt over the death of their child. Occasional turns of language are checked by narrative sloppiness, leaving a neutral and efficient piece of entertainment: lust is at once catered to and decried. Gary Amdahl

Store description
With 3 stores less than 1 hour outside the DC/Metropolitan area (1 in Gaithersburg, 1 in Frederick and 1 in Hagerstown, MD), we have the largest selection of books in the tri-state area. Wonder Book and Video has been in business since 1980 and online since 1997. We have over 1 Million books for sale on our website and another 1 Million books for sale in our 3 locations. Items on Abe are not necessarily in stock at our retail locations. Please do not call the stores to place orders for Abe Books sales. We have a very active online inventory and as such, we can receive multiple orders for the same item. We fill those orders on a first come first serve basis, but will refund promptly any items that are out of stock. Since 1980 it has always been about the books. ALL kinds of books from 95 cent children's paperbacks to five figure rare and collectibles. A merging of the old and new is where we started, and it is where we are today. Our retail stores have always been places where a reader can rush in looking for a title needed for a term paper that is due the next day, or where bibliophiles can get lost "in the stacks" for as long as they wish. In 2002 USAToday recognized us as "1 of 10 Great Old Bookstores", and we have been featured in numerous other newspaper and TV stories including Washington Post and CSpan. Members ABAA, ILAB.…
