In spite of the recent advances in computational techniques as a result of the enormous increase in efficiency of computers, problems still exist which cannot be solved without recourse to experiment. In addition, although the computer models have been increasingly successful in simulating a wide range of engineering problems, it is essential that the results of these models are validated and verified against experiment. Hence, the communication of scientists and researchers working experimentally with their counterparts specializing in computer codes is very important and mutually beneficial.
The success of these proceedings derives from the continuing importance of developing a getter understanding of how to match computational methods with experiment. The greater diversity of engineering and scientific software, together with the emergence of increasingly powerful computer codes, has led to an increasing need to re-appraise experimental validation. More efficient experiments are being developed to assess numerical results, and these proceedings provide a wealth of material relating experimental results with those obtained from programs.
