Computational Models of the Auditory System (eng)

The Springer Handbook of Auditory Research presents a series of comprehensive and synthetic reviews of the fundamental topics in modern auditory research. The v- umes are aimed at all individuals with interests in hearing research including advanced graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and clinical investigators. The volumes are intended to introduce new investigators to important aspects of hearing science and to help established investigators to better understand the fundamental theories and data in fields of hearing that they may not normally follow closely. Each volume presents a particular topic comprehensively, and each serves as a synthetic overview and guide to the literature. As such, the chapters present neither exhaustive data reviews nor original research that has not yet appeared in pe- reviewed journals. The volumes focus on topics that have developed a solid data and conceptual foundation rather than on those for which a literature is only beg- ning to develop. New research areas will be covered on a timely basis in the series as they begin to mature.

This volume, Computational Models of the Auditory System, has as a systems approach where the focus is on studies which contribute to the big picture of hearing. In effect, the work covered in this volume, and the volume itself, builds a global model of audition. The chapters, rather than focusing on details of individual components of the hearing system, address the concerns of readers and researchers who want to know how the auditory system works as a whole.

Raymond Meddis is Director of the Hearing Research Laboratory in the Department of Psychology at the University of Essex. Enrique A. Lopez-Poveda is Director of the Auditory Computation and Psychoacoustics Unit of the Neuroscience Institute of Castilla y León, University of Salamanca. Arthur N. Popper is Professor in the Department of Biology and Co-Director of the Center for Comparative and EvolutionaryBiology of Hearing at the University of Maryland, College Park. Richard R. Fay is Director of the Parmly Hearing Institute and Professor of Psychology at Loyola University of Chicago.
