Synopsis:

Computers play an important role in the analyzing and designing of modern DC-DC power converters. This book shows how the widely used analysis techniques of averaging and linearization can be applied to DC-DC converters with the aid of computers. Obtained dynamical equations may then be used for control design.

The book is composed of two chapters. Chapter 1 focuses on the extraction of control-to-output transfer function. A second-order converter (a buck converter) and a fourth-order converter (a Zeta converter) are studied as illustrative examples in this chapter. Both ready-to-use software packages, such as PLECS® and MATLAB® programming, are used throught this chapter.

The input/output characteristics of DC-DC converters are the object of considerations in Chapter 2. Calculation of input/output impedance is done with the aid of MATLAB® programming in this chapter. The buck, buck-boost, and boost converter are the most popular types of DC-DC converters and used as illustrative examples in this chapter.

This book can be a good reference for researchers involved in DC-DC converters dynamics and control.

About the Author:

Farzin Asadi received his B.Sc. in Electronics Engineering, his M.Sc. degree in Control Engineering, and his Ph.D. in Mechatronics Engineering. Currently, he is with the Department of Mechatronics Engineering at the Kocaeli University, Kocaeli, Turkey.

Farzin has published 25 international papers and 6 books. He is on the editorial board of 6 scientific journals as well. His research interests include switching converters, control theory, robust control of power electronics converters, and robotics.

Professor Hudgins is a native of West Texas. He attended Texas Tech University, in Lubbock, Texas, where he received a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1985. Dr. Hudgins served as Associate and Interim Department Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of South Carolina prior to joining the University of Nebraska as Chair. He continues to serve as an electrical engineering program evaluator for ABET since 2000. Dr. Hudgins' research involves power electronic device characterization and modeling. This includes devices made from silicon and wide bandgap materials such as silicon carbide and gallium nitride. Dr. Hudgins served as the President of the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) for the years of 1997 and 1998, and as President of the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) in 2003. He has also served in many international technical conference committee roles through the IAS and PELS, including General Conference Chair of the 1999 IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference, Technical Program Chair for the 2001 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting, and General Conference Chair of the 2002 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting. Dr. Hudgins has published over 60 technical papers and book chapters concerning power semiconductors and engineering education, and has worked with numerous industries including Ford Motor Co., Northrup-Grumann, International Rectifier, Powerex, and Harris Electronics.
