McKinney received his B.A. in psychology from the University of New Hampshire and his M.A. and Ph.D. in speech communication from Pennsylvania State University. He teaches courses in concepts in communication studies, mediation, communication theory, and negotiation at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Dr. McKinney has also taught at James Madison University (Virginia) and Angelo State University (Texas). He taught at UNCW from 1990-1999 and returned to UNCW in 2005. He has also traveled to Vietnam twenty times to teach Vietnamese business managers negotiating skills in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Vung Tau.
