About this Item
Subtitled "A brief account of the aims and achievements of The Amalgamated Cotton Mills Trust Limited (ACMT) and its component companies". In 1918 ACMT was formed by the merger and flotation on the London Stock Exchange, organised by London financial interests, of 15 large Lancashire cotton enterprises bought from their local family owner/managers. This ASTONISHING Art Deco book, lavish and internally immaculate in its original labelled presentation solander box, is a report by ACMT on progress two years later. It was not on general sale but distributed free to the various stakeholders: local management, shareholders - including past owners, operatives, banks, suppliers, customers, politicians etc. The major objective was to assure all concerned that, far from having a focus solely on short-term profits and dividends, the new Board was creative and forward-looking, thinking long-term to maximise business potential. This is an early example of expensive financial/industrial Public Relations. It was compiled by two London businesses: A.J. Wilson &Co Ltd in conjunction with Hudson & Kearns Ltd, well know photographers and producers of exhibition catalogues etc. Foreword 6pp, followed by an unpaged collection of 15 astonishing Art Deco brochures for each of the subsidiary companies. They contain photographs of mill buildings, machinery etc. combined with original screen prints and chromolithographs, each company having a different Art Deco design motif. A pencilled note in another copy suggests, without proof, that the fairy motif for Horrockses could be by Arthur Rackham. Bound in contemporay beige cloth with a composite picture of a cotton boll and mills on the cover, which shows signs of wear. The book, printed on heavy wove paper, is internally FINE. More images available on request. The book in its case weighs 2kg (4.4 lbs). Postage quotation on request. Size: 11.5 x 8. Copyright: David Rigby. Seller Inventory # 000205
