Why would a decorated soldier have to choose between saving his family and betraying his nation? Why would the GESTAPO have an interest in this family and their connections to old friends? Could a simple telegram from Spain trigger interest for both the family and a relentless GESTAPO agent? It is 1944 and the Third Reich burns and bleeds as vengeful adversaries advance. Concert In The Darkness, a historical fiction work, is set in the context of the last year of WWII as the situation within Germany becomes completely hopeless. Kurt Hoffman, a decorated Luftwaffe fighter pilot struggles in vain to hold his growing fears at bay. Plagued by self doubt and disgust with Luftwaffe leadership, he continues to fly as ordered. His wife and two children are forced to flee Koln following bombing raids. Finding temporary shelter with an elderly cousin, Kurt's wife Eva is dismayed to learn that she will be forced to share what she had hoped would be a haven of peace with a half-mad SS soldier recovering from terrible battle wounds. Klaus, Eva's 14 year old son grows bored with country life and soon falls under the spell of the SS soldier. To his mother's horror, the boy prepares to join the Hitler Youth and go off to war. The SS soldier begins to show an interest in Eva, and her fears for self and children escalate to desperation. This volatile combination is forced to boiling and the time comes when family survival requires unthinkable choices. Within the small household the situation becomes kill or be killed, remain loyal to duty or betray the Fatherland. What would cause a young teen-age boy to contemplate murder? Will Kurt Hoffman remain faithful to his wife when the affections of a young girl attract him so strongly? The destruction of civilization has always been reflected in the destruction of families. This work examines the myriad forces at work in the hearts of men while the fires of Goetterdaemmerung rage. Researched from multiple sources, this book also opens a unique window into the life and times of the great German chaos, revealing details of daily life, period military tactics, systems, and thinking.
