The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Zoology (Oxford Quick Reference)

The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Zoology is the first book of its kind to be published in many years, and the only such dictionary available in English. With over 6,000 entries, many gleaned from the highly-acclaimed Oxford Dictionary of Natural History, this dictionary offers comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of subjects such as animal behavior, physiology, genetics, cytology, evolution, Earth history, and zoogeography. In addition, there is full taxanomic treatment of specific animal groups, from arthropods and other invertebrates to fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals. With biographical notes on important figures in the history of zoology, and reflecting the current emphasis on ecology in the study of animals, The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Zoology is a one-of-a-kind guide no naturalist--professional or amateur--should be without.

"From Aardvark to Zymogenous, this book is the specialized offshoot of the acclaimed Oxford Dictionary of National History....Subjects covered include: ecology, animal behavior, earth history, cell structure and function, physiology, zoo geography, taxonomic principles and genetics....This book is all it claims to be, and it remains singular in its attempt to cover this material. Using this dictionary is a lot like taking an upper-level biology course, without the exams."--Animal Keepers' Forum
