Questo libro è il «romanzo russo» di Joseph Roth. Vegliati da un orologio di latta, le cui lancette sono ferme o segnano l’ora sbagliata, in un locale di Parigi che è un porto di naufraghi della prima emigrazione russa, alcuni avventori ascoltano una confessione, durante una notte interminabile. E subito siamo irretiti nell’intreccio di un esasperato feuilleton, che è una favola sul Male, sul suo potere ipnotico di spingere le proprie vittime in storie circolari e ossessive, che si stringono lentamente come un cappio. Questo Male metafisico, irriducibile, assume qui una forma peculiarmente russa: come oscura connivenza fra la delazione, il rancore, l’abiezione erotica e l’ansia di espiare, punirsi, confessare. Forse nessun libro ha saputo dare voce, al pari di questo, a un fantasma subdolo e imperioso: quello dell’«erotismo poliziesco». E, con la sua infallibile percezione dei «segni dei tempi», Roth ci ha offerto in queste pagine una delle più convincenti figure del Diavolo moderno: un essere mellifluo e imbrillantinato, che fa l’agente della polizia segreta zarista per passare poi, senza mutare in nulla le sue maniere, a quella di Lenin; un «sussurratore» che guida con dolcezza i suoi eletti in un «inferno profumato». È un inferno dove il protagonista entra di slancio, senza accorgersene, perché la sua soglia è segnata da un nobile sentimento: l’esigenza di una «giustizia assoluta». Ma, in un mondo dove ciascuno non è ciò che è supposto essere, dove «una falsa esistenza, costruita su un nome preso in prestito e rubato» riesce a «distruggere l’esistenza vera, quella reale», dove tutti i pesi sono falsi, dove i documenti falsi garantiscono l’immunità e i documenti veri celano in sé una condanna a morte, dove il legittimo è spurio e l’illegittimo si sente vittima di un complotto e perciò congiura contro i suoi presunti persecutori, in un mondo che sembra essere già di per sé una immane provocazione organizzata da una accorta polizia, la «giustizia assoluta» diventa facilmente la legge dell’inferno. Ma l’inferno non è, come vorrebbero i bigotti, solo un luogo di punizioni: piuttosto è un luogo di voluttà torturanti e di torture voluttuose, che svela con lentezza, con agio, la propria ultima atrocità. Grazie al genio romanzesco di Roth, noi traversiamo in queste pagine quell’inferno come fosse una serie di stanze in un appartamento, sentiamo il suo odore dolciastro, ci soffermiamo sulla carta da parati, avvertiamo l’attrazione del luogo come «qualcosa di caldo, di confuso, di assurdo», che però si offre con piena naturalezza, come se l’impulso più spontaneo fosse quello di abbracciare l’atroce.
La Confessione di un assassino è il terzo romanzo scritto da Roth in esilio e fu pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1936.
