Confessors of Faith: Lessons from the Lives of Martyrs

What can we learn from the Christian martyrs of history?

With believers in Christ Jesus being the most persecuted group in our modern world, the days of Christians being fed to lions may no longer be confined to the pages of history. Everywhere we look in today’s world, especially in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, Christians are being brutally tortured and executed for their faith in Christ. In the West, many believers are labelled intolerant and bigoted, they are vilified and censored for professing their beliefs and are also increasingly suffering violence and imprisonment for exercising their faith. With mainstream sources having no compunction in blaspheming and maligning Christ Jesus, while promoting abortion, transgenderism and transhumanism, it is evident that we have reached the age of apostasy and the rise of Antichrist.

In navigating modern times, it is instructive and useful to understand how those who suffered persecution in their generations dealt with the tyranny and oppression.

N. Davies’ book, Confessors of Faith, Lessons from the Lives of Martyrs, recounts powerful and harrowing testimonies from the lives of Christian martyrs over the past two millennia. It provides us with important insights and lessons for how true believers in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit should behave in times of violent persecution. The martyrs provide us with an example of courage, resilience, joy and true majesty while in the midst of great tribulation and brutality.

The stories of the martyrs of Christendom are related in the context of the historic times in which they lived and by reference to the persecutors who inflicted violence upon the innocent confessors of faith. Through their accounts we find a pathway to victory in the eternal kingdom of heaven. All it requires is unwavering obedience and faith in the promises, the protection and the unfailing assistance of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Their experiences also serve as a reminder of the personal cost and sacrifice required to stand firm in one’s faith in Christ.
