Second edition. Original 1/2 red morocco, worn, with marbled boards. 617 pp., 2 profiles, lacking the folding map of the Canals and Railroads of the United States by Henry Tanner. Contemporary ownership signature and bookplate of James Schott. Philadelphia directories of this period list him as a merchant. Armroyd's work is the most comprehensive contemporary source information on the early railroads and canals in the Untied States, giving dates of construction, length of each section, and plans for proposed railroads and canals. This was among the first works which attempted to document the internal improvements which were proliferating at that time. Printed by Lydia R. Bailey. Howes A317, Sabin 2013, Thomson 372.
