Highly praised by Albrecht Durer, Conrat Meit (1470-1550/51) is considered one of the most important sculptors of the early Renaissance in Europe. His innovative style stands in distinct contrast to the religious sculpture of the late Gothic. This is especially apparent in his masterly nude statuettes (commissioned by princely collectors), his portraits, and his large-sized works in marble and alabaster. German text. Von keinem Geringeren als Albrecht Durer hoch gelobt, gilt Conrat Meit (Worms 1470 - Antwerpen 1550 bzw. 51) als einer der bedeutendsten Bildhauer und schnitzer der fruhen Renaissance in Nordeuropa. Im Unterschied zur sakralen Bildkunst der Spatgotik besitzt Meits Werk einen vollig neuartigen Charakter. Dies bezeugen insbesondere seine fur furstliche Sammler virtuos gearbeiteten Aktstatuetten, seine Portrats und grossplastischen Werke aus Marmor und Alabaster.
