Conscience

Edward Michaels' gripping novel unfolds a tale of morality, friendship, and consequences against the backdrop of London. At the heart of the story are four friends, each thriving in their professional lives, who are secretly drawn into the orbit of an underground organization fighting terrorism through unconventional and dangerous means. By day, they maintain their respectable careers, but by night, they orchestrate covert operations to dismantle terrorist groups through staged 'accidents.' However, when a mission spirals out of control, causing collateral damage beyond what they imagined, the group is forced to confront the unintended consequences of their actions.

This tragic event shatters their lives, fracturing their friendships and sending them in different directions. Over the following 25 years, as the main character, David Sampson, grapples with guilt, alienation, and the blurred line between justice and wrongdoing, he undergoes a personal reckoning. His journey reveals a deeply embedded theme of ethics, identity, and the repercussions of a split second decision that changes the course of everything. The story is set within the context of cultural and political events reflective of the era. Michaels skillfully weaves real-world terrorism and period details into the narrative, grounding the diegesis in a vivid and relatable timeline.

Decades later, a world-changing event reunites the estranged friends, reigniting unresolved tensions and presenting them with a chance at both redemption and reconnection. This pivotal moment challenges them to reconcile their past and determine whether they can finally make things right; both with the world and within themselves. Michaels delivers a compelling exploration of the human condition, highlighting the complexities of loyalty, forgiveness, and the enduring impact of choices made in the moral gray.
