For Conscience' Sake, by the Author of 'Alice Lee's Discipline'

For Conscience' Sake, By The Author Of 'Alice Lee's Discipline' by Conscience. This Victorian religious romance follows Minnie Grey, the highly sensitive daughter of Mrs. Grey, living in the village of Southwell under the wise influence of the Reverend Mr. Gordon. The story introduces Frank Leslie, a lively young man from the nearby gentry who travels to Australia, hopes to marry Minnie, and returns with wealth and changed views. Across years of separation, Minnie’s devout piety, artistic gift, and moral steadfastness are tested by financial hardship, social expectations, and Frank’s rationalism. Minnie resists marriage when Frank cannot share her faith, choosing instead to live by Conscience and prayer. A shipwreck and a sea conversion bring Frank back to Minnie; their love endures, faith deepens, and they marry, building a life lit by devotion, art, and family. Through setbacks—poverty, relocation to London, and Mrs. Grey's anxieties—the novel remains a study of how belief and love sustain individuals and communities.
