The Conscript, By Erckmann-Chatrian. Transl is a historical tale told in the first person by Joseph Bertha, a young, physically disabled apprentice from Phalsbourg who is conscripted into Napoleon's army during the wars of 1813–1814. The narrative follows Joseph from his quiet domestic life with his beloved Catherine and his clockmaker mentor Melchior Goulden, through the brutal winter marches, sieges, and battles that sweep across Germany toward Leipzig. A sequence of episodes—from making a watch as a birthday gift for Catherine, to crossing the ice at the Rhine, to years of marching, fighting, and enduring starvation and sickness—expose war's terror, poverty, and the fragility of civilian life. The story develops into a meditation on the costs of empire, the hollowness of military glory, and the endurance of human love and friendship. It vividly portrays the humanity of ordinary soldiers, the cruelty of war, and the longing for return and peace.
