Original printed wraps with black cloth spine in b/w illustrated jacket 21 x 30cm. 77pp with many b/w plans and photos. Covers very good with repair to spine tail, although the pages are coming loose. Jacket very good. The Syrian Government commissioned this to help the Municipality and the Old City Committee headed by the Governor of Aleppo to assess the problems faced by the historic city. The UNESCO team, headed by Stefano Bianca, aimed to define how development of the new town would enable preservation and rehabilitation of the old. It found the historic fabric to be in a relatively good state, but threatened by western style development that had already destroyed or encroached upon historic parts. It therefore proposed general guidelines for development along with specific recommendations for the central area at Baba al Faraj and west of Bab Antakia, and the northern suburbs. The maps show Aleppo in the 19th century, 1930, and 1980, historic planning documents, traffic flows, suggested zoning and planning etc, accompanied by numerous photos of the old city. Architect and historian Stefano Bianca (b. Lisbon 1941) had written on the Muslim World since 1966, directed conservation projects for UNESCO and local governments in Morocco, Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Iraq and Saudi Arabia (1975-91), and was the first Director of the Aga Khan's Historic Cities Programme (1992-2006). His lifelong involvement in the Islamic World began after visiting Morocco in 1964 and 1966. Seller Inventory # 4433
