Synopsis
These seventeen papers, which originated at a conference organised by English Heritage in London in 1999, reflect on recent developments in the conservation of wall paintings from a multidisciplinary perspective. Supported by numerous illustrations, often in colour, the specialised and often technical papers discuss a range of conservation techniques, recent experiences, lessons to be learnt and visitor management. Subjects include Romano-British wall-paintings, paintings in Westminster Abbey, the techniques of domestic wall-paintings, 19th-century wall-paintings, metric survey techniques, the causes and mechanisms of detrimental change, risk assessment, the mineral approach to conservation, rock art sites, training in painting conservation and the international persepective.
