The Constitution of Man Considered in Relation to External Objects: With an Additional Chapter on the Harmony Between Phrenology and Revelation

The Constitution Of Man Considered In Relation To External Objects: With An Additional Chapter On The Harmony Between Phrenology And Revelation by George Combe is a 19th?century interdisciplinary treatise arguing for the unity of science and faith. Combe maintains that human nature is governed by three interlocking orders of law—physical, organic, and moral/intellectual—and that true virtue and religious understanding arise when these laws are known, balanced, and guided by enlightened revelation. Phrenology is presented as a comprehensive map of the mind’s faculties—animal propensities, intellectual faculties, and moral sentiments—that can illuminate Scripture and shape practical education, law, and social policy. The work defends geology, physiology, and phrenology as legitimate sources of knowledge and uses historical examples (e.g., Galileo, witch persecutions) to illustrate the risks of doctrinaire religion and the benefits of natural knowledge. It advocates reform in schooling, governance, and public life so that institutions align with human endowments, tempering base impulses with higher sentiments. An added chapter argues for harmony between Scripture and phrenology, and an Appendix collects supporting empirical observations.
