Constitution of the State of Virginia

Constitution Of The State Of Virginia. This volume presents the Virginia Constitutional Convention's 1864 effort at reorganizing Virginia's government during the Reconstruction era in Alexandria, adopting a comprehensive framework that preserves the enduring principles of the Virginia Bill of Rights and codifies a three-branch government. The document outlines the separation of legislative, executive, and judicial powers, sets qualifications for voters and officeholders, and details representation, taxation, and lawmaking processes. It establishes the General Assembly (Senate and House of Delegates), the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, and a judiciary organized into circuits and districts, along with related offices and the Board of Public Works. It also addresses slavery and emancipation, voting restrictions for former Confederates, and provisions for restoring government. The included ordinances cover restoration measures, debt and tax reforms, and loyalty considerations, followed by schedules and formal signatures of the convention officers.
