About the Documents

The Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, and announced the thirteen American colonies’ decision to separate from Great Britain. Drafted principally by Thomas Jefferson and revised by Congress, it became one of the most influential political statements in modern history. The Articles of Confederation served as the first constitution of the United States.
