About the Documents
The Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, and announced the thirteen American colonies’ decision to separate from Great Britain. The Articles of Confederation served as the first constitution of the United States. Drafted during the Revolutionary War and fully ratified in 1781, the Articles created a loose union of sovereign states with a limited central government. While they helped guide the young nation through and immediately after the war, their weaknesses soon became apparent, especially in matters of taxation, commerce, national defense, and enforcement of federal authority.
The Constitution of the United States was drafted in Philadelphia in 1787, ratified by the states, and put into effect in 1789.
