Hansten has long been associated with Drug Interactions & Updates (Lea & Febiger, 1991. 7th ed. and now updated by a quarterly newsletter), a resource targeted to health professionals. Here he joins with medical writer Schein to produce a consumer's version. Both their book and Richard Harkness's Drug Interactions Guide Book ( LJ 11/1/91) provide basic information, evaluate the degree of clinical significance of reported interactions, and cover foods and over-the-counter drugs, but each is arranged quite differently. Harkness lists drugs alphabetically by generic name. Schein and Hansten organize chapters by therapeutic class and cover more drugs and provide more information. Harkness may initially be easier to use, but Schein and Hansten are more comprehensive. This guide is recommended, but it should be supplemented by more general drug references such as the American Medical Association's Drug Evaluations (AMA, 1991. rev. ed.)--not all adverse reactions are caused by drug interactions (and not all drugs interact).
