Urban populations are rising, homes are being built smaller, space is at a premium, and more of us are choosing to do our gardening in pots and practice vertical gardening. Container gardening is the simple, economical way to grow your own vegetables without an in-ground garden. Even if you don't have a yard, you can grow a bounty of fresh vegetables right on your balcony or kitchen windowsill. Learn how to grow hassle-free beans, sweet beets, hardy kale, chili peppers, corn—yes, corn! The yield may be small, but there's nothing as sweet as freshly picked corn—chard, zucchini, cilantro, fennel, marjoram, mint, strawberries, and more. Using just containers, you can even grow little theme gardens like these:
- Salad Bowl: two types of lettuce, oregano, French marigold
- Mini Moussaka: eggplant, verbena, oregano, thyme
- Taste of Italy: tomatoes, basil, winter savory
- Pick of the Day: cherry tomatoes, dwarf lavender, basil, lettuce, chives, oregano
- Bouquet Garni Box: bay tree, rosemary, parsley, tarragon, sage, thyme
- Sweet Sisters: corn, bush beans, sweet potatoes, nasturtium
- Windowsill Pesto: basil, garlic chives, oregano, petunias
