1755. Hardback. With 2 engraved plates by and after J. S. M?ller, pp xi, (1, adverts), 220, 8vo, contemporary calf, gilt, neatly rebacked : some very light browning and fingering but still very good. Pearsal (1698-1762), a Somerset dissenting minister, who, in writing his 'Contemp-lations', a mixture of theology, philosophy and religion, was encouraged by Hervey to imitate his very successful 'Meditations'. ESTC calls for one plate only. The Nuremberg engraver, Johann Sebastian M?ller, settled in England in 1744, changing his name to Miller, became a leading book illustrator, engraving the plates for 'Ruins of Palmyra' and 'Ruins of Paestum' and also engraved designs for Chippendale. The two plates here are the first in Hammelmann's list of his English work and may well his first published work for an English book. . . . .
