About the Author

Lyman Tower Sargent is Professor of Political Science at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Notable appointments include associations with the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton; the University of Exeter, England; the University of East Anglia, England; and Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He is the author or editor of eleven books, including EXTREMISM IN AMERICA: A READER (New York University Press, 1995); POLITICAL THOUGHT IN THE UNITED STATES: A DOCUMENTARY HISTORY (New York University Press 1997); and UTOPIA: THE QUEST FOR THE IDEAL SOCIETY IN THE WESTERN WORLD (Oxford University Press, 2000).
