The book begins by charting the evolution of rug design over the last 100 years, before featuring innovative rugs by more than 50 contemporary international designers. Christopher Farr and Matthew Bourne have been the most influential pioneers in the recent renaissance in contemporary rugs. They are co-directors of the London-based rug design and production company Christopher Farr.

Fiona Leslie is a curator of the Designs Collection in the Prints, Drawings and Paintings Department at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. She is the author of Designs for 20th Century Interiors (2000).
