About this Item

Description:

A Bloomsbury association copy of Honore de Balzac's noted short story collection 'Les Contes Drolatiques'. Bound by Ralph Partridge, an amateur bookbinding enthusiast and prominent member of the Bloomsbury Group. In quarter crushed morocco binding, with hand-printed paper. Ralph worked for Virginia and Leonard Woolf. He was first married to the English painter Dora Carrington with whom he had a menage a trois with Lytton Strachey. Partridge was the unrequited love of Strachey for many years. Whilst married to Carrington, Partridge fell in love with Frances Marshall. He married her in 1894. In a letter to Partridge from Virginia Woolf dated 29 June 1925 she asks him to 'send me a list of your terms for binding books'. To the recto of front endpaper is written 'Bound by Ralph Partridge'. With the signature of Frances Marshall, later known as Frances Partridge. She is best known for the publication of her diaries which detailed her life within the Bloomsbury circle. She first met Ralph Partridge whilst working at a London bookshop owned by David Garnett and Francis Birrell. These books were likely bound by him, an amateur bookbinding enthusiast. In a letter to Partridge from Virginia Woolf dated 29 June 1925 she asks him to 'send me a list of your terms for binding books'. Being the first volume only. From the series 'Oeuvres Completes' of Honore de Balzac. Honore de Balzac was a French novelist and playwright. He is best known for his 'La Comedie Humaine' which presents a panorama of post-Napoleonic French life. In a quarter crushed morocco binding. Externally, smart, with fading to the leather at the spine. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Offsetting to the endpapers. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned. Scattered spots to endpapers. Otherwise, just the odd spot. Very Good Indeed. Seller Inventory # 699L24

Condition: Sehr gut. 395 (5) Seiten. 19,1 cm. Sehr guter Zustand. - Honoré de Balzac [?n??e d? bal'zak] (* 20. Mai 1799 in Tours; 18. . Aus: wikipedia-Honor%C3%A9_de_Balzac Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 450 Rotes Leinen mit goldgeprägten Deckelinitalen, mit goldgeprägten Rückentiteln und Schutzumschlag. Erste Auflage dieser Ausgabe. Ungekürzte Übersetzung. Seller Inventory # 55618
