In a rapidly changing world, organizations, to survive, like living breathing organisms, must learn to adapt to changes in the environment in which each operates. Continuous process improvement works to redesign and improve old processes by removing waste, constraints, and variation that may have been acceptable when implemented but render the process useless or of little to no value to the organization in the present time. Unfortunately, up to two thirds of all attempts to implement continuous process improvement in organizations fail. This book will address proven methods for implementing a successful, continuous process improvement program. And the fundamental thesis of the book is that culture is the invisible force that drives the behavior of members of the organization and unless continuous improvement is embedded in the organizations culture it will not happen. The book explains the sort of culture that is required to successfully implement continuous process improvement in organizations. The book begins with a discussion of the power of organizational culture. It then describes sorts of behaviors found in organizations that have embedded continuous process improvement in their culture. It concludes conclude with a description of the leadership behaviors essential to embedding continuous improvement into the culture of an organization.

About the Author

Robert E. Hamm Jr., PhD has served as a leader in organizations responsible for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft, support equipment and aviation components for over 30 years. The authors experience with continuous process improvement began in 1992 when employed to conduct Quality Assessments using the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria in the public sector. Preparation to lead continuous process improvement in a large organization began with training at a number of aviation industry companies implementing continuous process improvement. Bob has lead continuous process improvement efforts in public sector organizations employing from 700 hundred to 19,000 employees. The author has taught continuous process improvement techniques to senior leaders in the public sector for the past 7 years. He holds a PhD in Organization and Management and has published research related to senior leader commitment to continuous improvement. Bob is currently leading the implementation continuous process improvement in a 450 person organization responsible for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft, aviation support equipment and component repair. Dr. Hamm is the author of Continuous Process Improvement in Organizations Large and Small; A Guide for Leaders.
