Continuous-Time Sigma-Delta Modulation for A/D Conversion in Radio Receivers (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science, 634)

Continuous-Time Sigma-Delta Modulation for A/D Conversion in Radio Receivers describes the design and theory of continuous-time sigma-delta modulators for analog-to-digital conversion in radio receivers. The book's main focus is on dynamic range, linearity and power efficiency aspects of sigma-delta modulators, which are very important requirements for use in battery operated receivers like GSM phones. An important part of the book deals with the image rejection performance of quadrature sigma-delta modulators. It is shown that techniques like dynamic-element-matching and integration of a mixer with the sigma-delta modulator greatly enhance the performance and functionality. In addition, the authors provide the reader with a theoretical overview of continuous-time sigma-delta modulation, including non-ideal effects, stability issues and different filter designs. The book's concluding chapters present chip realizations showing practical implementations oflow-power and high-performance sigma-delta modulators for GSM and AM/FM radio applications.

From the reviews of the first edition:

"The book ... is meant to address the theory, design, and realizations of such a A/D converter for radio receivers. This book is very focused on several major design issues and also very practical for the IC design community. ... This book can be served as a design reference book for advanced design practicing engineers who are particularly interested in the high-performance A/D conversions. It has collected valuable and proved design experience in the report prototype chips ... ." (IEEE Circuits & Devices, Vol. 20 (2), 2004)
