The Preface is titled "FOOD AND DRINK IN SHAKESPEARE'S TIME" and opens with: "Let me make a confession. None of the recipes which appear in my book were ever prepared or tested by William Shakespeare or by anyone else who lived in the England of his time. Besides the fact that I wanted to, I have written this book because of three dissimilar yet related interests: people, Shakespeare, and cooking." The author notes she loves Shakespeare from childhood, was an acting carer, taught Shakespeare professionally, and later pursued interest in American Shakespeare Festival Theatre and Academy at Stratford, Connecticut.
