Item description from seller

[EPISTOLA JESU AD AGBARUM]. A Copy of a Letter written by our Blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Birmingham: J. Russell, Printer, 22, Moor-street, [c. 1814–1830]. Broadside, about 350 x 240 mm; large woodcut of the Crucifixion; the letter “found eighteen miles from Iconium,” with Christ’s Cures and Miracles, the Abgar letters and Lentulus’s description of Christ; within a border of cable ornaments; laid down on card. No other copy of this Birmingham edition located (BL, Bodleian, Cambridge, NLS, NLW, Univ. of Birmingham, Harvard). The Letter from Heaven as a household charm against lightning, pestilence and the dangers of childbirth, printed by Joseph Russell of Moor Street, convicted in 1819 for selling Hone’s Political Litany (VCH Warwickshire VII). Very good. Browned, splits along folds with small losses through woodcut and text, edges chipped with a strip lost from the right margin, border and imprint intact.

Store description

Atelier Zweig Rare Books is based in Marina del Rey, California, and was founded by a couple of bibliophiles, writers, and artists who view the book as a total work of art, uniting text, material, design, and history. We specialize in books of lasting cultural impact or controversy, books whose aesthetic qualities form a complete artistic statement, and books with significant provenance. We buy and sell as collectors first and dealers second, and we value our community of established and emerging bibliophiles who regard books as living cultural artifacts. Guided by the philosophy of Stefan Zweig, we see collecting not as accumulation, but as a creative and custodial act—in which collecting itself becomes an art of creation. Additional curatorial highlights can be found under @atelierzweig or www.atelierzweig.com…
