About this Item

8vo. 16 pp. Dis-bound, margins soiled. Ex library rubber stamp. Good. In 1874 Alexander Bickerton was appointed professor of chemistry at Canterbury College, New Zealand University. Here Bickerton provides a series of letters that put forth his theory of "partial impact," which stated that the partial impact of heavenly bodies was the origin of new stars and the cause of other unexplained astronomical phenomena, such as the origin of nebulæ, the formation of variable stars, binary stars, and more. Bickerton claimed that his theory succeeded in carrying the principle of evolution beyond a mere planet or even a solar system, and showed it to be a universal law controlling the cosmos.
