496 pp bound in blue cloth gilt. Frontispiece steel engraving of Madame Stael. This copy embossed in bright gilt on top board "A. J. Balfour. Whittinghame. 1884". Spine some rubbing and fading of gilt title. [Arthur James Balfour, 1st Earl of Balfour, KG, OM, PC, DL. B: 25 July 1848. D. 19 March 1930, was a British Conservative politician and statesman. He served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from July 1902 to December 1905, and was later Foreign Secretary from 1916 to 1919. He would have been 38 at the time of this acquisition and at this time Conservative Member of Parliament for Hertford ]. The book also bears the bookplate of Caroli Sarolea, i.e., Charles Sarolea, "In Angello Cum Libello". Charles Sarolea (1870-1953) was a Belgian academic and versatile publicist. He was for a long period Professor of French at the University of Edinburgh. He wrote books on a wide range of topics on international affairs.
