"Tensions between the United States and Mexico were at an all time high after the annexation of Texas in 1845. President Polk looked to legitimize the acquisition and expand further at the expense of America's neighbor to the south. General Zachary Taylor's Army of Occupation was camped in Corpus Christi between 1845 and 1846, and the president ordered him to advance to the Rio Grande to ostensibly secure U.S. territorial claims that Mexico refused to concede. Just a few months later, war would be declared. This view shows the idyllic encampment prior to the Army of Occupation's departure, and includes a supply train in the foreground. Numerous tents can be seen in the background, with two ships anchored in the Gulf. The print was included in John Inman's "The History of the World", published in Hartford, Connecticut in 1854."
