The Correctional Officer: A Practical Guide

This book is a practical guide for the unsung heroes of corrections: the men and women who must go into our nation's correctional facilities every day and deal with society's wrongdoers―the inmates. It is also a training resource and teaching tool for correctional officers in basic training or service training, or for college students who are considering a career in corrections. Written by a correctional officer with over 20 years experience, The Correctional Officer is presented in a factual, readable manner that introduces the reader to the basic functions and hardships of dealing with inmates.

The Correctional Officer gives an overall picture of the state of corrections today in the United States, and also gives the reader a good insight into the history of the corrections system. It provides valuable "hands on" information about gangs, problem inmates, security, riots/disturbances, communicating with inmates and their legal rights. Wherever possible, Cornelius draws upon actual events and his own experience dealing with inmates. Each chapter has relevant review questions, terms, and a reference list for future study.

Lieutenant Gary Cornelius retired in 2005 from the Fairfax County (VA) Office of the Sheriff, after serving over 27 years in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. His career included assignments in confinement, work release, planning and policy development, programs, and classification.
