Correspondence Connected With The Deposition Of Mulhar Rao. This volume compiles official correspondence, parliamentary papers, and Commission reports regarding the Baroda State under Mulhar Rao Gaekwar between 1873 and 1875. It documents British concerns over misgovernment in Baroda, the appointment of a Commission to investigate abuses such as the reduction of officials, mistreatment of prisoners, and agricultural grievances, and the subsequent measures taken to reform administration. A central focus is the inquiry into allegations that Mulhar Rao instigated wrongdoing against Colonel Phayre, the British Resident, including an attempted poisoning in 1874, as well as secret communications with Residency servants and remunerations that allegedly influenced officials. The Commission, led by Sir Richard Couch and Sir Richard Meade, produced a joint report finding the imputations true in substance, though with some dissent, and recommended the deposition of Mulhar Rao and the restoration of native administration under a selected successor. The Despatches also include the controversial khureeta (petition) and related correspondence, and show the complex interplay between imperial authority and princely rule in 19th-century India.
