Cotton Mather, Keeper of the Puritan Conscience (Paperback or Softback)

"Cotton Mather, Keeper of the Puritan Conscience" provides a comprehensive biographical examination of one of the most influential and controversial figures in early American history. As a polymath, minister, and prolific author, Cotton Mather stood at the epicenter of the religious and political life of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. This work explores Mather's profound dedication to the Puritan ideals of his ancestors while navigating the shifting intellectual and social landscape of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The narrative delves into Mather's complex character-a man driven by intense spiritual fervor and an unwavering sense of duty to his community. It examines his role during the Salem Witch Trials, his scientific pursuits, and his tireless efforts to maintain the traditional religious order against the encroaching tides of Enlightenment thought. By situating Mather within the social and ecclesiastical structures of his time, the book illuminates the broader tensions of a colonial society in transition.

Ralph Philip Boas offers a nuanced portrait that moves beyond simple caricature, revealing a man of immense intellect and profound internal struggle. This study remains an essential resource for readers interested in the evolution of American religious thought, the history of New England, and the life of a man who served as the self-appointed conscience of a burgeoning nation.
