Two issues of Paul Fromm's right wing newsletter "dedicated to preserving and promoting the basic virtues of Western Civilization - individual freedom; individual responsibility; a love of country; and a willingness to work and pay one's own way and not be a burden on others." Fromm founded the newsletter in June, 1972 after he and a number of other members resigned from Western Guard (formerly known as the Edmund Burke Society, of which Fromm was a founding member) after it became increasingly racialist, xenophobic and anti-Semitic. Fromm had previously edited Western Guard's organ "Straight Talk." Countdown included articles, reviews, news, and reader submissions on moderate right wing concerns such as Communism and socialism, free enterprise, individual sovereignty, abortion, capital punishment, etc. Contributors included a number of other prominent ex-Western Guard members and former "Straight Talk" writers Patricia Young and Kastus Akula (a successful Belorussian novelist). Other contributors to these two issues include Erin O'Brien, Bruce Allen, John Morgan, John Peregrine, Walter Zarins, Wolfgang Neuhoff, etc. The two issues included here are Vol. 1, No. 3 (Aug. 1972) and Vol. 1, No. 8 (Feb. 1973). The newsletter ceased in 1976. Both issues consist of corner-stapled 14" x 8 ½" sheets, 19 pp.; 21 pp., illus. Wilcox Collection stamp to the front cover of issue three, which also has the mailing label of the Chicago anti-Semitic activist Joseph Dilys. Reference: Barrett, Stanley.
