Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands and gilt fillets, title and publication date to spine, endpapers renewed. Light rubbing to extremities, a few tiny spots to spine. Moderate toning to interior, spark burns and faint stains to a few leaves, headlines, side-notes and catch-words affected in a few places by trimming, moderate edgewear to title page. $500. * Sixth edition, one of three issues, the others two from 1635. This venerable justice of the peace manual went through some twenty editions between 1618 and 1746. This work is also significant because it firmly established the alphabetical topical structure adopted in later texts. Rooted in Crompton, Fitzherbert and Lambard, The Countrey Justice offers advice on such matters as buggery, customs, riots, murder, felonies, rogues, vagabonds and high treason. A very good copy of a later 17thC edition of the book first published in 1618 which became the standard work on the duties of J.Ps. The final edition was published in 1746. Some age toning to several gatherings, a number of leaves heavily affected, waterstain to head of pp89-90, but generally a clean copy. Contemporary blind ruled calf, expertly rebacked, gilt panelled spine. Armorial bookplate of William Clayton. ESTC R29291. The work, first published in 1618, became the standard work on the duties of Justices of the Peace. The final edition was published in 1746. In Chaper CXVIII Dalton included guidelines to deal with witches and witchcraft, emphasising the need for body searches to find evidence of demonic contact, and stating that it was acceptable to undertake 'the examination and confession of children.'
