No publication date, circa 1880s. -- The author (1842-1895) was a Scottish geographer. Although the subtitle indicates this was a "popular" work, the descriptions are wonderfully nitty-gritty in detail. For example, farm real estate in the Piedmont region was a bargain because of ruin from the Civil War, while in Virginia it was easier to get a "secure title" to land because of the father-to-son inheritance custom; drawings of 3 fish from a lake in Bolivia; in a New Zealand area "the skylark is greater in numbers than in any district in England." Abundance of nice engravings incredibly detailed. A 1913 news article about the Sphinx is glued in. -- Hardcover, 6 volumes, 8x10.6 inches, lapis lazuli covers with bright gilt and black decoration. Condition: near fine (spine tips a bit rubbed; couple small dampmarks; a hinge exposed). -- There is a variant edition of this set in the Robert Frost Collection at the University of Pennsylvania. -- International or expedited shipping not available for this heavy set.
